The Bell Curve - A Powerful Visual Tool
I'm Bill Baylis, and I want to share with you today one of the most interesting tools you can use to either examine your own business or and from my CPAs, can you help your clients come into awareness exactly where they are in their own business journey? I call it the Bell Curve metaphor of the truth about any hundred businesses. Anytime, any industry, any economy.
We know something about 100 businesses follow through with me. Simply ten, maybe 20 of these businesses are going out. They're just not updating. They're not staying part of the trends. They're just kind of existing. They're going to go out of business very shortly. But we do know something else, and this is interesting. Ten, maybe 20, but I'm going to guess closer to ten are absolutely dominating the market. They're the ones, year after year, they're running themselves controlled, profitable. They're probably running their business by the numbers. They got an outstanding, unique value proposition. They just dominate the market year after year. What's going on in the middle.
Now, I'm going to be generous if I say 70 of these businesses, but I'm going to say close to 80% of businesses are in this situation. Can you guess? I call it just above water. They're just doing enough to get by. They're in survival mode, they're paying their bills, they're scrapping by. They're doing the best they possibly can, but something's lacking. They're not doing the things they need to do to run their business controlled, profitable, and move into the dominating area of a business.
Now, I wanted to ask you a question. Where's your business? Where is it on this curve? Are you closer to going out of business? Are you closer to dominating? What tells you that they're actually there? What facts can you use that you're actually trending that way? Do you have numbers? Is your CPA helping you identify this? Is your CPA helping you plot that course for dominating and getting more than your fair share of the market?
Think this metaphor through. I think it's very interesting. If you like to discuss it, feel free to reach out to me. If not, leave comments.
